Colección de Momentos: Diseño en México 1999-2015

A Collection of Moments: Design in Mexico 1999-2015, in collaboration with Design Week Mexico / World Design Capital CDMX 2018, will have its opening on February 6th 2018 at Museo Universitario del Chopo. Traven family and Quieto Stool are part of this awesome exhibition.

Curator Cecilia León de la Barra aims are to state the lack of an institutional collection of design made in Mexico, as well as making a temporary space for the generation of knowledge and understanding of history, not only that underlying each of the objects, but also of the social and economic context in which they were generated. This exhibition gathers more than 100 objects of 40 designers, including individual and collective artists, through which it is possible to locate the place in the culture of design made in our country in this span of 16 years. Read more about the design pieces that will be featured at Museo Universitario del Chopo. Sempering; gerund of the verb “to semper”. In architecture and design, a constructive action on a material (zʼɛmpərɪŋ); gerund of the verb “to semper”. In architecture and design, a constructive action on a material or component that leaves a significant trace in the end product. Neologism from the surname of the German architect Gottfried Semper, 1803-1879, author of Der Stil in den technischen und tektonischen Künsten, 1860-63.

A year after Milan’s 2015 EXPO, and more than one hundred and fifty years after the publication of his Der Stil in den technischen und tektonischen Künsten,
what classification would Gottfried Semper put forward to interpret the number of artifacts that today shape our environment, and that cross the established borders of any possible ‘system of the arts’, of any separation in competences and sectors in the design of objects, architectures, landscapes?

In the wider context of the events produced by the XXI Triennale di Milano 2016 International Exposition, the exhibition Sempering, realized in the spaces of the MUDEC in porta Genova, would like to focus the attention on several ‘ways of doing’ of contemporary design, without pretending to formalize a complete geography of them and without separating them into disciplinary typologies. A simple concept is at the base of its choices and its arrangement: the one of a continuous evolution and revision in time of the relationship between means and ends, between ‘methods’ and ‘forms’.
